Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday (March 4) European countries need to support Turkey’s policy in northwestern Syria to solve the migrant crisis, as he urged the bloc to act in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province, as Greek authorities push migrants approaching its borders.

“Our Greek neighbors, who try all means to bar migrants like drowning them at sea or even shooting them to death, should not forget that one day they might need the same mercy,” Erdogan said and added that he invites all European countries, including Greece, to respect asylum seekers arriving in their countries as per international human rights law.

The president emphasized the necessity of establishing a political system, including a new constitution in Syria based on unity and territorial integrity of the country, as well as free elections and a democratic administration.

“If European countries want to solve the migration crisis, they should support Turkey’s political and humanitarian solutions in Syria,” Erdogan said.

Erdogan also said the Turkish military is successfully destroying the Assad's regime militias in Operation Spring Shield in northwestern Syria's Idlib province.

"Since the start of Operation Spring Shield, Turkey destroyed 3,138 regime militiamen, 151 tanks, 100 artillery units, three warplanes, eight helicopters, eight air defense systems, 10 ammunition dumps, 60 armored vehicles and 47 howitzers," Erdogan said.
