Iraqi demonstrators bury those killed in unrest

Iraqi demonstrators protested in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Saturday (October 5) as families buried those killed after days of nationwide unrest.

The protests over unfair distribution of jobs, lack of services and government corruption erupted on Tuesday (October 1) in Baghdad and quickly spread to other Iraqi cities, mainly in the south.

Officials estimate at least 81 people in Baghdad and other cities were killed after days of violence.

The unrest is the deadliest Iraq has seen since the defeat of ISIS in 2017 and has shaken Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's year-old government. The government has responded with vague reform promises that are unlikely to placate Iraqis.
