Merkel says Germany will lift Russia sanctions if Ukraine's sovereignty restored
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday (June 18) that western sanctions against Russia would not be lifted unless Ukraine’s sovereignty was restored, Reuters reported.

Merkel said she and visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had discussed the Minsk peace agreement, adding: “As long as there is no progress on this front, the sanctions cannot be lifted and the sanctions related to Crimea can only be lifted if Crimea returns to Ukraine.”

On June 17, during a visit to Paris where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelenskiy called for European Union countries not to ease up their pressure on Moscow over its seizure and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and Russia’s support for separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine.
