Turkish, US defense chiefs discuss Syria
Turkey's defense minister and the acting US defense chief spoke over phone Thursday (Feb 28) to discuss recent developments in Syria, Turkish Defense Ministry said.

Hulusi Akar and Patrick Shanahan addressed US withdrawal process and proposed safe zone in Syria, the ministry said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Turkey-US Joint Task Force, tasked to coordinate the American troops withdrawal from Syria, started in Ankara on Thursday.

This is the second meeting of its kind after the initial one held in Washington on Feb. 6.

“This task force only focuses on the withdrawal,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Feb. 6 elaborating on the mission of the task force.

Last December, US President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement that the US would be withdrawing all of its troops from Syria and said ISIS had been defeated in the country.
