91 dead after quake strikes Bali & Lombok
At least 91 people have been killed and more than 200 severely injured in a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Indonesian tourist islands of Lombok and Bali on Sunday (August 5), the secondly deadly quake to hit in a week.

A spokesperson for the country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) gave the updated toll on Monday and said all the victims were Indonesian. All of the victims were on Lombok, including 72 in North Lombok, except for two, who died in Denpasar, Bali and one who died on the Gili islands, Guardian reported.

More than 100 aftershocks have hit the area since the quake that struck the island at 6.46pm on Sunday, and 3,000 homes have been damaged, leaving many displaced.

Rescue efforts were hampered overnight by power outages, broken bridges and a lack of phone reception in some areas, making it difficult for the agency to immediately assess the full extent of the damage.

Sunday’s quake was also strongly felt in Bali. Pictures showed damage to two shopping malls and a temple in Ubud, and there was also minor damage to Bali airport. Despite superficial damage, flights from Lombok and Bali airports continued to operate on Sunday evening.

The quake triggered widespread panic across Lombok, with residents fleeing their homes and heading to higher ground, after the tremor initially triggered a tsunami warning. The alert was later cancelled.
