MSF calls on Europe to change migrant policy to stop sea deaths

The president of Medecins Sans Frontieres, Spain, on Saturday (June 16) called on Europe to change its migration policy, describing the Mediterranean as the deadliest migratory corridor in the world, Reuters reported. 

David Noguera, speaking in Valencia as the ships carrying the 629 migrants originally adrift on the rescue boat Aquarius made their way towards Spain, said emergency service were at hand and prepared to treat the most vulnerable passengers on arrival.

Aquarius was off the coast of the Spanish island of Majorca on Saturday (June 16), with migrants also aboard two Italian vessels escorting the ship it to Spain.

The three vessels are expected to dock in Valencia on Sunday (June 17) morning where emergency and legal services will be ready to take in the migrants after Italy and Malta refused to open their ports to the rescue ship.

The first vessel is expected to reach the port at 0400GMT, the Aquarius at 0700MGMT and the finally the third vessel is due at 1000GMT, the Valencian regional government said.
