UN urges Syria warring parties to engage in next round of talks
United Nations Syria mediator Staffan de Mistura called on warring sides there to prepare to engage in substantive political discussions at the next round of talks starting on Thursday (March 23), a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The talks - expected to last until April 1 - will focus on governance, constitutional change, UN-sponsored elections and counter-terrorism measures, UN spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci said in a statement read out at a UN briefing.

Assad regime and opposition delegations to the fourth round last month have confirmed their attendance, she added, and de Mistura has traveled to Riyadh, and will be going to Moscow and Ankara for consultations ahead of the talks.

The Assad war on Syrians, now in its seventh year, rages on as opposition fighters gain grounds on many fronts in the capital Damascus, in Daraa and in Hama northern countryside.
