Turkish FM criticizes presence of Shiite Popular Mobilization Forces in Mosul
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu criticized the presence of the Popular Mobilization Forces and Shiite militias in the city of Mosul and noted that the US is not obliged to depend on “the terrorist group” to take down ISIS, referring to the Syrian PKK-wing PYD.

Speaking in Cyprus during a joint press conference on Tuesday (February 21) with the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) Mustafa Akinci, Cavusoglu said: "Involving a Shia militia in a 99 percent Sunni Arab city is dangerous. That’s why Hashd al-Shaabi hasn’t entered Mosul up to today."

"Likewise, it is so dangerous to involve the PKK and YPG terror groups ," he added.

“There are 65 states under the umbrella of the International Alliance, many of them contribute effectively in the war against Daesh, such as Germany, Turkey, France, UK, US, and Saudi Arabia, and sometimes Qatar. Each of those countries have special forces, just as there is a moderate opposition, of whom all are local."

Cavusoglu also added the US should reconsider its decision to support the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), affiliated with the terrorist group PKK, in its campaign against the ISIS.

“We have asked from our American friends in the new administration to reverse the serious mistakes made by its previous administration,” he said, explaining that “Washington is not obliged to depend on a terrorist organization to defeat Daesh.”

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU.

Asked about Turkey’s ongoing Operation Euphrates Shield in northern Syria, Cavusoglu said the next target was Raqqa, a city on the northeast bank of the Euphrates River.

"We can take steps in Raqqa with the right groups, with the right strategy, not with those who want to achieve their own purposes through ethnic cleansing," Daily Sabah reported the minister as saying.

Cavusoglu also said leaving Raqqa in the hands of the terrorist PKK/PYD would pose a serious threat to the region.
