Opposition names delegates to Geneva talks

Opposition names delegates to Geneva talks
Syrian opposition, meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh, named on Saturday members of the delegation to attend UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva due to take place on Feb. 20.

Political sources told Orient Net that representatives from the opposition’s Higher Negotiations Committee (HNC), opposition fighting factions, and the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces decided Saturday on the names of the delegate to participate in the forthcoming Geneva talks.

The delegation will consist of 20 delegates of political and military opposition figures. Muhammad Sabra was chosen as the Lead Negotiator, while Dr. Nasr al-Hariri was chosen as the Head of the delegation, according to the sources.

Orient Net learnt some names of other delegates such as Riyad Nassan Agha and Riyad Hassan, while Saeed Naqrash, Essam al-Rayess, Yahya al-Aridi, Hisham Marwa, Tareq al-Kurdi and Abdulahad Steifo were chosen as consultants.

The sources reiterated that there were no disagreements between the HNC and the fighting factions during the selection process, pointing out that the fighting factions were allocated half of the delegates’ number.

Late December last year, a ceasefire agreement, brokered by Turkey and Russia, went into effect across Syria, amid numerous violations by Assad regime and its Iran-backed allies.

On January 23 and 24, peace talks were held in the Kazakh capital Astana where participants discussed means to consolidate the ceasefire. The talks were attended by representatives of Iran and the US, along with those of the Assad regime and opposition.

UN envoy Staffan de Mistura has warned opposition earlier that he would pick their delegates to the Geneva expected to be held mid-February if they could not decide on their representatives by Wednesday last week.
