The event was organized by the Polish journalist and blogger Anna Alboth, aiming to put political pressure to help civilians caught up in the war launched by Assad regime in Syria.
The march left Berlin, heading to Aleppo, on Dec 26. Organizers said they demanded help for civilians, protecting human rights and working out a peaceful solution for the people of Aleppo and other besieged cities in Syria.
Wednesday marks the 45th day in the march. Having left the Czech Republic, the marchers are in Vienna, Austria. They plan to cover around 20 kilometres (12 miles) a day and walk through Austria and several western Balkan countries to Turkey – and then on to Syria.
Separately, on their Facebook page the activists of "Civil March for Aleppo" published on Tuesday a post in solidarity with prisoners held at the Assad regime’s notorious Saydnaya Prison, condemning the torture, rape, humiliation and mass hanging taking place there. “This is happening as we all carry on our daily routines. Most of us will not read report on Saydnaya, those who choose to do so, will become speechless,” the post read. The post urged visitors to read the report prepared by Amnesty International (AI) about the horrors of Saydnaya Prison run by Assad terrorists. “Remember this name - Saydnaya - say it out loud. Read the report entitled "Human Slaughterhouse: Mass hangings and extermination at Saydnaya prison, Syria" and be terrified, as you read.” At the end of the post, links for the AI report and an interactive reconstruction of the prison—prepared to show the horrors inside were posted. AI issued on Tuesday a report titled "Human Slaughterhouse: Mass hanging and extermination at Saydnaya prison," in which it said as many as 13,000 people were hanged in five years at the notorious Assad regime prison near Damascus, accusing the regime of a "policy of extermination."
