2 Turkish army officers face lifetime prison over July coup charges
A Turkish court has sentenced two army officers to lifetime imprisonment over charges related to July 15 failed coup in the country.

The 2nd Criminal Court of Erzurum Province has sentenced Murat Kocak and Murat Yilmaz, a Colonel and a Major respectively, to life in prison after convicting them of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.

The defendants, who were on duty in Erzurum the day of the coup, claimed innocence.

According to Turkey’s government, Fetullah Gulen, a US-based preacher was the mastermind behind the failed coup of July 15, 2016.

The attempted coup left 248 people dead and injured about 2,200 others.

Following the coup attempt, Turkish authorities arrested tens of thousands of people, including many in the armed forces, police, justice system, and education sector, suspecting them of being part of Fetullah Terror Organization (FETO).
