US betrayal of the Syrian revolution

US betrayal of the Syrian revolution
Hassan Haidar in his article in Al-Hayat discusses the US-Russian latest agreement on Syria and says that it summarizes the gradual retreat which the Syrian revolution was compelled to follow after it confronted the regime violence when it started and was obliged to accept the US as a supporter while Iran and Russia supported the dictator to kill his own people.

The US used to say something but do another to avoid responsibility and then found partners in the area to further evade responsibility on top of them was Russia.

Haidar points out that the US announced that Assad should leave but soon it changed its aims and wanted to make the opposition do the same. This was clear in Geneva when it started focusing on details instead of comprehensive change in Syria.

This last US-Russian agreement brought the Syrian uprising to the scratch and visualized it as a fight among gangs to divide influence and not a revolution that aims at getting rid of a bloody despotic regime. The US warned that if Syrians do not accept the agreement, Syria will be divided, as the writer explains.

The writer points out that US and Russia, on the face of it, cancelled their allies’ role but in fact Russia continued supporting Assad more than the US supports the opposition. The US gave Russia a bigger role in the area because of its desire to reach a fast solution that allows it to continue “fighting terrorism” that constitutes its understanding with Moscow.

The write concludes that whether the truce succeeds or not, the opposition will pay a high price. If it follows the US betrayal, it will be unable to stop the gradual concessions which will mean ending the revolution and if it refuses the US betrayal, it has to confront alone the violence of the regime and its allies.
