War in Syria was allowed to happen for far too long - UN envoy
Yacoub el Hillo, UN’s outgoing humanitarian envoy to Syria says, in an interview with the BBC, that the people of Syria could have been spared the brutality of the five past years if the international community had acted with “political guts”.

El Hillo talked about how bad the situation in Syria is, “Siege continues to be used as a tactic of war, and we have eighteen places that have been under siege for far too long, years.”

“Aleppo is on the verge of joining that list with two million people,” el Hillo added.

When asked about his greatest regret, el Hillo said that Syria has been thrown back forty years in development terms, stating that “Syria is a mess today”.

“Infrastructure destroyed, half the population displaced, two million children not in school, 4.8 million refugees, and so on and so forth,” el Hillo explained.

“It should not have happened,” He added.

When asked about what could have made the difference to help Syria and the Syrians, el Hillo answered, “Political guts and courage on the part of the international community, including the Security Council.”

He added that what is happening in Syria was allowed to happen for far too long to the extent that it has become too difficult to tackle it or put it in right direction.

“This should have been done at the very beginning. It could have been a much easier job,” el Hillo said.

It is worthy to mention that Yacoub el Hillo was appointed as UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Syria in August 2013.
