Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, received on May 25, 2016 Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria Staffan de Mistura. The minister reaffirmed his support for the mediation conducted by Staffan de Mistura.
He expressed to him France’s deep concern at the repeated violations of the cessation of hostilities and the Assad regime’s systematic blocking of humanitarian access, contrary to the commitments undertaken and the requests repeated once again on May 17 in Vienna by the International Syria Support Group.
Ayrault reaffirmed the need to implement a transitional government by August 1, in accordance with UNSCR 2254. Conditions on the ground must allow the swift resumption of negotiations between the regime and the opposition, especially with respect to the arrangements for the political transition.
