Arab peoples and change; remaining aspirations and current protests

Arab peoples and change; remaining aspirations and current protests
Salma Kalieh writes about the return of 2011 atmospheres when popular uprisings in different parts of the Arab World succeeded in removing some of their dictators.

Kalieh believes that a large sector of those who have joined these uprisings think that their dreams of change have ended. Some of the parties and political elites have joined the new regimes and started repeating what ex-regimes’ media outlets used to say.

Kalieh criticizes these elites saying that their everyday motto has become stressing stability or limiting any political movement to parliamentary activities.

Youths who belong to the middle class thought that victory was so easy and it was a piece of cake mission. Those youths, according to Kalieh looked basically for democracy and freedom and wanted to express themselves without any complications. However, their dreams broke so fast.

A new wave of protests is emerging now after waiting for some time to achieve their dreams. Kalieh says this new wave mainly consists of unemployed graduates and other workers who are looking to improve their financial situations.

Kalieh then moves to another pivot which is the claim made by regimes that they are after preserving the state through elections. However, those claims weren’t convincing for the people who kept moving against those attempts.

Kalieh concludes his article by saying that those new demonstrations are a reminder of the popular movements in 2010 that were against dictatorship and authoritarianism, but the new ones are against the new economic status that has impoverished the peoples and marginalized them. This new status, according to Kalieh can’t make any step backwards because it is based on mafia-like networks that are benefiting from stealing the wealth of their nations and peoples.
