Lancaster City welcomes refugees
The city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the US has long been a welcoming city. From the Summer Music Series at Longs Park to our block parties, popular international restaurants, concerts, cafes and yearly celebration of World Refugee Day, Lancaster welcomes the refugees from many different parts of the world who have settled here. Last year the city of Lancaster alone resettled more refugees than twenty other US states combined.

However, on January 2, 2016, our city was appalled at the bigotry and hatred displayed by a group of 40 protesters. These anti-refugee protesters had come from neighboring cities and counties to assemble in front of the Church World Service building, the local refugee resettlement office.

In response, approximately 400 Lancaster residents organized a counter-protest welcoming Syrian refugees to the city. Holding banners reading, “Refugees are welcome in Lancaster,” “Love not hate,” “Marhaba,” and “No walls, no hatred,” the counter protesters stood for hours in the January cold refusing to allow hatred and bigotry to speak for their city.
