An explosion took place in the heart of Afrin city in the northwestern of Syria and killed at least four civilians, Orient News correspondent said.

Local sources said at least nine civilians were killed as the explosion took place in the vegetable marketplace, a crowded area in the city.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The death toll could rise as there are serious conditions among the injured people.

Afrin is controlled by the Free Syrian Army and the Turkish military after driving the PKK-affiiated PYD from it in 2018 by Operation Olive Branch.
