Two Syrian workers died when they were trapped in a shop that was set on fire by rioters during a large protest against new taxes in Downtown Beirut Friday (October 18), Civil Defense sources said.
The protest, one of several across Lebanon, had started peacefully but later disintegrated into riots and confrontations between protesters and police.
The sources said four Syrians who worked at the building were in a room above the shop that was set ablaze. Two managed to flee through a window but the other two died of smoke inhalation.
