Turkey's Akar, US' Syria, anti-ISIS envoy Jeffrey discuss Manbij
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, and the US Special Representative for Syria Engagement and the special envoy for the anti-ISIS coalition James Jeffrey met in Ankara late Tuesday.

During the meeting, the two officials discussed the latest developments in Syria, focusing on the Manbij roadmap and the situation in the east of the Euphrates.

The coordination on the US pullout from Syria, strategies for a post-US period in the northern parts of the country controlled by the PKK-affiliated Units (YPG), the fight against PKK and ISIS, implementation of the Manbij roadmap, and the S-400 purchase from Russia were the top issues Akar and Jeffrey exchanged views on.

Turkey and the US remain at odds over the latter's Syria policy, which is centered on support to the globally-recognized terrorist group PKK's Syrian wing YPG. The US allied itself with the YPG to fight ISIS in Syria, but Turkey argued that using one terror group to fight another makes no sense.

Jeffrey, a former ambassador to Turkey, has in the past admitted that the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed wing, the YPG, are indeed the Syrian affiliates of the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist group by the US and EU as well.
