Syrian refugee hopes to be Olympic star
A Syrian refugee has stunned swimming experts by learning how to swim in just 12 months and is now training for the 2020 Olympics.

Eid Aljazairli, who is 24 years old, nearly drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2016.

“My story starts with the American swimmer Michael Phelps,” Aljazairli says, “I was sitting at home late at night and I saw a video of him on YouTube."

“He really inspired me and ignited a passion inside me,” he adds. “After watching two hours of films, I just said to myself: this is something I have to do.”

Now he is living with a British family and training at the London Aquatics Centre, as he tries to win a place on the Refugee Olympic Team.
