Venezuelan crisis escalates near Colombian border
Hundreds of Venezuelans gathered at the Simon Bolivar International Bridge on the Colombian side of the border on Saturday (February 23), with several being treated for injuries by emergency service personnel.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Saturday his government had broken relations with Colombia and would expel some Colombian diplomatic staff after Colombia assisted the opposition's efforts to bring humanitarian aid into the country.

Colombia's foreign minister said Maduro would be responsible for the safety of Colombian diplomats in the country.

The Venezuelan military had earlier used tear gas against volunteers unloading aid on the Francisco de Paula bridge along the Colombia-Venezuela border.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido last month declared himself to be the country's interim president, prompting several nations including the United States to recognise his interim presidency.
