Venezuela's Guaido arrives at massive anti-Maduro rally on motorbike

Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido arrived at an opposition rally in Caracas on Tuesday (February 12) on the back of a motorbike, as tens and thousands of citizens turn out against President Nicolas Maduro.

These protesters support Juan Guaido, the head of the National Assembly, who swore himself in as interim president on Jan. 23 in a direct challenge to Maduro's rule and quickly won the backing of countries in the region, European nations and the U.S., but he still has no control over state institutions or any functions of day-to-day governance.

Maduro's adversaries say he has run roughshod over democratic institutions, including the opposition-run congress, and destroyed the once-buoyant economy through a corruption-riddled exchange control system and arbitrary nationalisations.

Venezuela is suffering from hyperinflation, produce shortages and a mass migration of citizens to neighbouring Latin American countries.
