Police cleared out on Tuesday (January 29) around 300 migrants from an illegal makeshift refugee camp at the Porte de la Chapelle quarter in northern Paris.

The cabinet director for the Paris region prefect said the refugees had been sent to various migrant shelters in the region on a voluntary basis.

France has previously cleared migrant camps in Paris, only for new camps to spring back up.

Europe has faced a migrant crisis since 2015 following wars in Libya and Syria, and more than 1 million people from Africa and the Middle East have tried to reach the continent via Turkey or by sea.
