De Mistura to hold talks with Russians, Turks & Iranians

UN Syria Envoy, Staffan de Mistura will hold talks with high level officials from Russia, Turkey and Iran next week in Geneva on establishing a credible constitutional committee, a UN statement said.  

"The he efforts to establish a constitutional committee have been the subject of continuing consultations. In this context, Special Envoy de Mistura anticipates hosting high-level representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey in Geneva early next week as he finalises his assessment, to be presented to the Security Council on 20 December, of the possibility of establishing a credible, balanced and inclusive constitutional committee.

The consultations are taking place in accordance with Security Council resolution 2254 (2015) and the Sochi Final Statement, and bearing in mind the timing indicated in the Joint Statement made in Istanbul by the leaders of France, Germany, the Russian Federation and Turkey.

The Special Envoy is currently in Qatar where he will be consulting the Secretary-General in the margins of the Doha Forum, after which he will be returning to Geneva, and thereafter will proceed to New York to report to the Security Council.”
