18 dead in clashes between Assad and Asayesh militias in Qamishli
Clashes between Kurdish militias and Assad militias in Qamishli killed 18 militiamen Saturday (Sep. 8), the Asayesh statement said.

The rare flare-up in Qamishli city near the Turkish border saw 11 Assad militiamen and seven Kurdish militiamen killed, the Asayesh said in a statement, AFP reported.

The Asayesh said an Assad regime "patrol opened fire on our forces with light and medium weapons, causing our forces to respond to this violation, which killed 11 regime fighters... and seven of our comrades".

An AFP correspondent at the scene saw empty camouflaged pick-up trucks in the street.

Some bore bullet holes, while traces of blood were visible on the tarmac, he said.

Reports say that “both sides are on alert” in anticipation of developments.

Activists and social media posted photos of Assad militiamen’s dead bodies. The photos show a pile of dead bodies in pickups and others dumped on public streets.

Deadly clashes last broke out between Kurdish militias and pro-regime militiamen in Qamishli in April 2016, but ended days later with a truce.
