The phone contact was made shortly after Turkey responded to remarks by US President Donald Trump after he threatened the country with sanctions unless Ankara releases a detained American pastor, AA reported.
The Turkish foreign ministry called the US demands "unacceptable".
"No-one can give orders to Turkey and threaten our country," said spokesperson Hami Aksoy.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman said the US administration will not achieve its desired results by threatening Turkey.
"The United States must reconsider its approach and adopt a constructive position before inflicting further damage to its own interests and its alliance with Turkey," Ibrahim Kalin said in a written statement.
US President Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence have threatened Turkey with sanctions if it fails to release jailed pastor Andrew Brunson.
However, President Trump demanded his immediate release, or Turkey, a Nato ally, would face "large sanctions".
The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!

US Vice President Mike Pence also sent out a series of strongly worded tweets, saying Turkey must act immediately or "be prepared to face the consequences".
To President Erdogan and the Turkish government, I have a message, on behalf of the President of the United States of America. Release Pastor Andrew Brunson NOW or be prepared to face the consequences. #IRFMinisterial

The American Pastor Andrew Craig Brunson, who is facing terror charges in Turkey, has been put under house arrest on Wednesday, according to a Turkish court ruling.
Brunson was arrested in Izmir in December 2016; he was charged with committing crimes, including spying for the PKK and the Fetullah Organization (FETO).
