Putin orders withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria
Vladimir Putin has ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria, Moscow’s state news agencies are reporting.

"I order the Defense Ministry and the chief of the General Staff to begin the pullout of the Russian military group to permanent locations," Putin told an audience of military personnel.

The Russian leader made the announcement during a quick visit to the Hmeymim air base in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia, the heartland of Bashar Assad’s Alawite minority.

Putin claimed Russia’s task force and the Syrian government troops have routed the grouping of international terrorists in Syria.

Putin said that if "terrorists raise their heads again", Russia would "carry out such strikes on them which they have never seen".

He was also quoted as saying that Russia would keep the Hmeymim air base as well as a naval facility at the Syrian port of Tartous.

Russia first launched air strikes in Syria in September 2015 in its biggest Middle East intervention in decades, turning the tide of the conflict in Assad’s favor while dramatically increasing Moscow’s own influence in the Middle East.
