The UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said that elections could not be held while Assad regime is still in power, reiterating that the political solution is still in the core of Geneva talks which are set to be held on the 23rd of March.
De Mistura said in an interview on Al-Arabiya that the Astana ceasefire deal was still holding saying the mitigating the violence will help in Geneva talks.
De Mistura already said the Assad delegation put forward a suggestion on exchanging detainees and prisoners of war which should be taken up in Astana.
The first UN-led peace talks in almost a year ended last week without breakthrough but the United Nations mediator previously said the warring parties now had a clear agenda to pursue a political solution to the country’s Assad war.
