Opposition: Assad deliberately failing political process
The head of the opposition delegation at Syria peace talks in Geneva, Nasr al-Hariri, said on Wednesday (March 1) that an “in-depth discussion” is taking place regarding the political transition with the UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.

During a press conference, al-Hariri stressed that “the opposition will continue with the discussions as long as the UN and de Mistura are serious about reaching a political solution,” reiterating the opposition’s stance that “a political transition is a priority for the Syrian people.”

“The regime is trying to escape the topic of a political transition by opening up other topics,” he argued, noting that de Mistura mentioned that Russia is pressuring Assad regime into discussing the political transition.

The head of the opposition delegation explained that “the only partner in this political process is the international community,” pointing out that “no clear agenda for the political process has been reached until now.”

“Assad regime is using tactics to fail the political process. The regime’s claims that it is fighting a war against terrorism is just a false pretend,” he said, mentioning the times when Assad regime fought the Free Syrian Army as the latter was battling ISIS.

Dispute over the transition phase and the fate of Assad are the main reasons behind the failure of the previous peace efforts by the United Nations to find a solution to the Syrian issue, which is approaching its seventh year.

The opposition insists that any peace deal must include the removal of Assad from power once a transitional period is set to begin.
