Differences between Turkey, Russia may affect Astana talks
Osama Abu Zeid, the consultant of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Syria peace talks in Astana said on Thursday that the negotiations witness difficulties and differences between the guarantor countries, which casts shadows over the meeting.

Today in the morning, bilateral meetings started between parties in Astana talks, including opposition and Assad regime delegates.

Abu Zied said that matters do not seem organized between the guarantor countries, Turkey and Russia, and the matter is still under discussion, according to Anadolu agency. It is clear that there are disagreements regarding the agenda of the meeting, which casts shadows over the start of the meetings.

The FSA consultant accused Russia of not being serious about achieving anything in Astana, reiterating that if this second round of talks fails to change the situation or provide something tangible, it will be the last.

The second round of Astana talks is expected to be finalized today on Thursday with a joint statement, an official in the Kazakh ministry of foreign affairs said.

Abu Zeid also stipulated honoring the promises that Russia gave in regards to the ceasefire and releasing the detainees held in Assad regime detention centers. He said opposition is not optimistic because Russia and Iran continue to support Assad regime which is killing civilians in Syria, warning that if Russia did not change this method, Astana talks will have no effective results.

Opposition’s spokesman Yahya al-Aridi told AFP Wednesday the opposition was participating, but as a “smaller” delegation than the one it sent for the talks in Astana last month, when it refused to negotiate directly with Damascus.

Opposition fighters, who initially cast doubt over their participation in the latest meeting will be led by Mohammad Alloush, a leading figure of Jaysh al-Islam, he confirmed.

Negotiations hosted by the United Nations in Geneva are due to begin next week.
