174 protesters were also injured in the clashes which took place on Saturday.
A Baghdad security official said that four of the five killed were shot dead, while the reason behind the death of the fifth protester remained unknown.
In a reaction to the killing of his followers, al-Sadr said in a statement that the blood of those protesters killed would never go in vain, threatening with a the Baghdad government with massive retaliation.
Al-Sadr said that the protest was peaceful, but the Ministry of Interior Affairs claimed that some protesters were carrying guns.
It is also worth noting that Baghdad officials said that two rockets landed in the capital’s highly fortified ’Green Zone’ following clashes at the anti-Baghdad protests called for by the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
