Baghdad: Tensions escalate after killing of Sadri protesters ‎
Tensions escalated today between Shia ‎leaders after a bloody day of protests in ‎Baghdad resulted in killing five protesters and ‎a security man.‎

The Baghdad Ministry of Interior Affairs ‎confirmed on Sunday the death of five ‎protesters of those who support Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia cleric with a large following. ‎

‎174 protesters were also injured in the ‎clashes which took place on Saturday.  ‎

A Baghdad security official said that four of ‎the five killed were shot dead, while the ‎reason behind the death of the fifth protester ‎remained  unknown. ‎

In a reaction to the killing of his followers, al-Sadr said in a statement that the blood of those ‎protesters killed would never go in vain, threatening ‎with a the Baghdad government with massive retaliation. ‎

Al-Sadr said that the protest was ‎peaceful, but the Ministry of Interior Affairs ‎claimed that some protesters were carrying guns. ‎

It is also worth noting that Baghdad officials said that two rockets landed ‎in the capital’s highly fortified ’Green Zone’ ‎following clashes at the anti-Baghdad protests ‎called for by the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-‎Sadr.‎

Thousands of supporters of firebrand Shia ‎cleric Muqtada al-Sadr staged fresh protests ‎in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday to ‎demand the dissolution of the country’s ‎electoral commission.‎

Protesters gathered in central Baghdad, ‎demanding the establishment of a new ‎electoral commission "untainted by political ‎affiliations". ‎
