UN prepares invitations for Syria peace talks
The UN is preparing for Syria peace talks planned for 20 February in Geneva, Switzerland.

UN envoy Staffan de Mistura will send invitations for the talks in the coming days, the UN spokesman said yesterday.

De Mistura had warned the armed opposition that he would pick their delegates to the talks if they failed to select their representative by Wednesday.

The envoy however appears to have backtracked on the ultimatum.

“The invitations will go out in the coming days,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

“We all know that these processes are rather complex, demand a lot of discussion and consultation with various people.”

De Mistura’s threat to appoint the negotiating team drew a sharp response from the opposition, which said it was not the UN envoy’s “business” to pick delegates to peace talks

Meanwhile the Turkish NTV broadcaster reported, citing a diplomatic source, that the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the situation in Syria during a phone conversation earlier today.

Russia and Turkey are guarantors of a nationwide Syrian ceasefire that came into force on 30 December and has been holding up in general, despite continued reports of violations.
