#WithTheRefugees petition heading to UN headquarters in NYC
#WithTheRefugees, a petition that began circulating on Brazilian social media as #ComOsRefugiados during the Summer Olympics in Rio, is on its way to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The petition, which exceeded 1.3 million signatures, will be delivered to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon and General Assembly President Peter Thompson prior to the convening of the UN summit regarding the issue of refugees and immigrants to be held on September 19, 2016.

The petition calls on the 193 countries participating in the summit to support refugees by stressing that each refugee child must have access to education, each family must be granted a safe place to life and that each refugee must have a chance to work or/and learn new abilities.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, spoke last June about  the reasons that prompted the Commission to invite the whole world to support the refugees in this petition, saying: “We are going through a period of deepening the conflict and disputes around the world, which resulted in more people fleeing from their homes”.

Grandi added: “What we need is understanding, compassion and the political will to work together and find real answers to the plight of refugees… this has become the major challenge of our time”.

A symbolic concert will be held upon delivery of the petition to the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, in which the poet Emy Mahmoud will deliver a poem about Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian child whose body washed up on the shores of Turkey.

Yousra Mardini, the Olympic swimmer from Aleppo who helped push a boat full of refugees to Greece and was a member of the first official Refugee Olympic Team, is also scheduled to attend the ceremony.

It is noteworthy that this occasion will be the culmination of a week of continuous broadcast across the world by supporters of the Commission on Facebook to encourage the public to sign the petition.
