Ceasefire effective, Assad regime violates, opposition concerned
The US-Russia brokered ceasefire in Syria has come into effect Monday at sunset, while Assad regime violated the truce only minutes after that, killing civilians in Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus countryside.

The deal, agreed to on Friday by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, aims at putting an end to fighting and moving towards a political transition.

Assad regime, as well as Iran and Hezbollah armed group, have all agreed to the deal, while opposition fighters’ groups expressed serious concerns.

In a joint statement, many opposition fighters’ groups, including the Free Syrian Army (FSA) alliance, Ahrar al-Sham and Jaysh al-Islam, lashed the agreement, calling it "unjust", without fully rejecting it.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said at a State Department press conference, two hours after the ceasefire came into effect, that there had been reports of violations "here and there".

Kerry urged all parties to adhere to the truce deal, adding that it may be the last opportunity to bring peace to a united Syria.

Hours before the truce, Syria’s main opposition group and several factions of opposition fighters called for "guarantees" on the implementation of the ceasefire before fully endorsing it.

"We want to know what the guarantees are," said Salem al-Muslet, spokesman for the High Negotiations Committee (HNC).

"What is the definition that has been chosen for ’terrorism’, and what will the response be in case of violations?" Muslet told AFP.

Opposition fighters’ commanders were also very concerned about targeting Nusra Front, which is a crucial component of the opposition in northern Syria, according to the joint statement issued by opposition fighters.
