Overview of Turkey’s roadmap to solution in Syria
Majed Azzam explains in his article in Orient Net Arabic the three main points reiterated by Turkey for a solution in Syria; keeping the unity of both the Turkish and Syrian territories, preventing the Kurds from establishing their own autonomous country north of Syria and the setting up an all-inclusive and non-sectarian governments in Syria.

The writer explains that it is no surprise that maintaining Turkey’s unity is an important factor for a solution in Syria, since a Kurdish region in northern Syria will represent a political barrier or a separating wall preventing Turkey from communicating with the Arab world.

Turkey is not behaving in the mentality of the minority as is the case with Russia and Iran. It refuses any partitioning solutions in the region,  the writer states, explaining that the Kurds’ possible establishment of their own autonomous country will not only partition Syria and Iraq, but also Turkey.

The writer then explains that Turkey’s demand of an all-inclusive and non-sectarian government in Syria immediately rids the sectarian and totalitarian Assad regime from the equation. However, the writer then explains that, unlike Iran’s persistence on Assad’s survival, Turkey has lately loosened its position on the removal of Assad and has to an extent agreed for his survival for a few more months until the start of the interim period.

The writer then states that Turkey appears to still have some feelings of animosity with Saudi Arabia, explaining that even though the Kingdom had nothing to do with attempted failed military coup in Turkey, Riyadh and Ankara share conflicting views regarding the Kurdistan region.

The writer concludes by confirming that Turkey’s attitude towards Assad and the Syrian opposition has not changed, explaining that Ankara sees no future for a proper solution in Syria with Assad in power, even if Ankara appears to adhere to the demands of other nations to maintain its nations’ relations intact.
