Hasan al-Hariri: The doctor who lost 7 ’little birds’
Like many peoples worldwide, most Syrians believe that the souls of dead little children turn into angelic birds that keep praying for their bereaved parents in Heaven.

However, this celestial comforting belief is not the only reason that makes Dr. Hasan al-Hariri, 46, from Daraa province, overcome the tragic loss of his seven children who were killed after Assad warplanes dropped a barrel bomb on their home back in 2014.

Full of defiance and faith in the principles of justice and freedom that long triggered his resistant spirit against Assad’s dictatorship, Dr. al-Harari was among the first people who joined the revolution in Darra when peaceful demonstration broke out in the city in March 2011.

Watching the increasing numbers of injured demonstrators, Dr. al-Hariri contributed with other doctors from his town of Busr al-Harir in the eastern countryside of Darra in establishing clandestine field hospitals to treat the wounded demonstrators and other FSA fighters after Assad’s militias repeatedly and brutally stormed the city forcing people in the area to take up arms to defend themselves.

With a soft voice and a beaming face, Dr. al-Hariri recalls that tragic moment when he came back after he finished his mission in treating some injured fighters to find his house reduced to rubble and the tiny recovered bodies of his seven children wrapped in blankets laying on the ground.

While sitting helplessly next to the bodies of his seven children, Dr. al-Hariri’s companions told him that nobody of his family members survived and that they had been looking for the eighth body of his youngest daughter for five hours without any result. He pointed at a corner in the house and told them to dig up there. After some time, they fortunately could recover the lone survivor of his family unscathed.

Three days later when Dr. al-Harari was paying a visit to what used to be his house, a missile hit again the same place leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to Jordan where he received medical treatment for few months.

After recovering, Dr. al-Hariri insisted on going back to Darra to be next to his friends and people while fighting Assad brutal regime.

Whenever Dr. al-Hariri finds time, he goes to his destroyed house to remember the voices and faces of his “little birds” as he likes to describe them.

“I can still see their school bags, clothes, and toys. This makes me feel more determined to follow my dream in achieving justice and fighting Assad brutal regime,” said Dr.al-Hariri to Al-Jazeera TV reporter.

Dr. al-Hariri is still actively moving from one front to another to treat wounded fighters.

Dr. al-Hariri has turned his grief into an inspiring resistance and exemplary courage, vowing to keep fighting the brutality of Assad regime till he dies and joins his “little birds” in Heaven.
