Skeleton construction

Skeleton construction
“Dear Mustafa Jacoub” the letter said. “Congratulations! Your artwork with the title ‘skeleton construction’ has been approved…”

Mustafa Jacob, once a student of electrical and electronic engineering in Syria, did not set out to become an expert in the art of “photo manipulation” -- but like many Syrians whose lives were interrupted by Assad’s violent response to the once peaceful uprising, Mustafa Jacob has turned to creating revolution art as a way of coping with his own anxiety and grief over what has been happening in his homeland as well as a way of pursuing a career in artistic design.

The letter sent by the admin of a gallery in the UK was to inform Mustafa that his portrait titled “skeleton construction” depicting the carnage in Syria had been selected to be featured in an exhibition being held by the Saatchi Gallery in London.

The Saatchi Gallery, which opened in 2008, aims to provide an innovative forum for little known international artists to exhibit their unique forms of contemporary art in the UK.

Mustafa’s portrait, a form of contemporary art called photo manipulation which was chosen from among a variety of submitted entries, is currently being displayed on a hi-resolution screen located on the 2nd floor of the Saatchi Gallery.

The on screen exhibition features a rotating selection of artwork by winning Showdown artists chosen from Saatchi Online Magazine’s weekly critics’ picks and Showdown competition.

The selected artworks rotate randomly along with the artist’s name, city and country of origin, as well as the title of each piece and its medium and size.

The selected art pieces remain in the loop as long as the screen is up and as of now an end date has not yet been decided for the current exhibition.

To be selected for the Saatchi Gallery exhibition is the equivalent of being nominated for an Oscar to artists who have been working in the field of Syrian Revolutionary Art.

For this particular piece with the many messages it contains to be among the selected art entries is also viewed as a stamp of honor for the Syrian Revolution and the variety of creative avenues that have been taken in the pursuit of its goals and vision.

It is also proof that Syrian Revolutionary artists have made an indelible fingerprint in the evolution of contemporary art in the 21st Century.
