Planet Syria sets up Soup Kitchen in Geneva
Planet Syria is an initiative of non-violent Syrian activists which was launched in 2014. The goal of the campaign is to engage people around the world in solidarity to bring an end to violence and extremism in Syria.

Planet Syria has launched a new initiative to bring attention to the fact that one million people continue to live under siege in Syria and are deprived of food and medical care. Many continue to die of starvation and malnutrition-related illnesses.

In an effort to represent the people trapped in the besieged areas, Planet Syria members set up a Siege Soup Kitchen outside the Geneva talks to protest the international community’s inaction on breaking these sieges and ending a multitude of war crimes, as well as stopping the bombing of civilians and freeing the detainees.

The group has set up their soup kitchen outside the Palais des Nations where they attempt to serve Siege Soup made of grass and leaves to the delegates of the Geneva III peace talks.

Planet Syria has been calling upon the creativity of its members everywhere to find similar nonviolent ways of protesting the international community’s lack of action on lifting sieges and ending the crimes against humanity being committed in Syria.

In the past week, activists of the Azaz Media Office in Aleppo have produced several semi-humorous videos aimed at bringing an increased awareness of the desperate situation still being faced by residents in besieged Madaya.

In spite of recent deliveries of supplies by the UNHCR the people in Madaya continue to die of malnutrition due to starvation.

The residents who continue to be trapped in the area which has been under a forced starvation siege since July have had to resort to eating whatever they could find, including cat meat, just to survive.

Since no one appears to be listening to the cries for help from Madaya residents, Azaz activists figured that animal rights activists might at least pay attention to the cats that are being eaten so they created a video of cats discussing the plight of their relatives in besieged Madaya.

The activists of Azaz also produced a video of a cooking show on how to make soup out of leaves that featured a bowl of leaf soup garnished with a stuffed animal cat.

Planet Syria continues to grow and raise its voice with Syrian activists everywhere who say that a solution for Syria does not begin in Geneva. It must begin in Madaya, Moadamiyeh, Daraya, Homs, Deir Ezzor, and Aleppo.

It must begin in the places where innocent civilians continue to die daily due to indiscriminate bombing and forced starvation by the Assad regime and its allies --- even as their representatives put on a show of seeking a political solution in Geneva.

It will not begin until world leaders are willing to do more than just talk and get serious about putting an end to war crimes and start protecting civilians.
