In a new development, news reports said that the opposition delegation will meet de Mistura today in one of the hotels of Geneva but not in the U.N. headquarter to discuss humanitarian issues before engaging officially in the talks.
News reports added that the HNC spokesperson Salem al-Meslet will hold a press conference to assure the HNC demands before the official engagement in the talks.
No guarantees
From his side the second spokesperson of the High Negotiating Committee Riyadh Nassan Agha said that no political side has offered any guarantees to the HNC delegation. “There is a political support only, but there aren’t any guarantees that can be relied upon,” Agha added.
The HNC delegation confirmed that it will not enter the negotiation hall unless the previous U.N conditions are met.”
Agha continued: “The continuous siege and the bombarding of civilians are considered ill-intention motivated actions and an abortion of the negotiations,” emphasizing that “ending the siege doesn’t need a long time, it can be done in one hour by three orders, then talks about forming a transitional governing body. Other than that is just a waste of time.”
In a related context the HNC delegation preceded its meeting with the U.N. special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura by threatening to withdraw from Geneva talks in case Assad regime keeps bombarding civilian areas in Syria.
The General Coordinator of the HNC Riad Hijab confirmed that the participation of the opposition in Geneva talks is connected to improving the humanitarian side but not within the negotiating process that should be based on the U.N resolutions that state on forming a full power transitional body.
The General Coordinator added that the opposition participation in Geneva talks come after written assurances submitted by many international powers to carry out article “12” and “13” of Security Council Resolution “2254” in addition to the pledges by the U.N. General Secretary and the written commitment by de Mistura to consider the humanitarian situation as non-negotiable issue since it is a natural right of the Syrian people.
