What de Mistura missed in his speech to the Syrians was to tell them to raise their voices from underneath the rubble or from the bottom of the sea since, according to de Mistura, the Syrian victims are the ones who are asked to contribute to the success of the talks instead of saying that the talks should help stop the massacres committed against the Syrians inside and outside their country.
Nevertheless, it is still good that de Mistura remembered the Syrian people and addressed them with respect and sympathy after their tragedy has become almost forgotten by the whole world. But, notably the speech directed to the Syrians is only related to the burdens and costs that they have been causing or creating because of their sufferings. Moreover, de Mistura praised the HNC decision to put the demands about the humanitarian side apart from the talks, given that they are part of the Security Council Resolution 2254 which constitutes with Geneva I Communique the basic reference of the talks while the U.S foreign ministry contradicted itself when it considers the opposition’s demands to be legitimate but asks them at the meantime to attend the talks without any “preconditions” about confidence-building measures on top of which is lifting the siege imposed by Assad regime on Syrian cities and towns.
It is worth reminding de Mistura and all the international parts that ending the Syrian tragedy should start by forcing Assad regime and its allies to stop targeting civilians and allow all displaced people to come back to their houses. In short term, to stop terrorism means to protect the civilians from all the brutalities of war launched against them.
For the U.N. now, what is most important is to stop this blind show of power by Russia and its partners in Syria and to separate the humanitarian track from the political one.
In this concern, it is good to remind de Mistura that the U.N. has complained that 90% of its requests to provide humanitarian relief aid to distressed areas were rejected by Assad regime. So, does such an issue need both American and Russian efforts to make negotiations between Assad regime and the U.N.?
If the international powers are really willing to end this heart-wrenching tragedy they have first to end the sufferings of civilians and stop the bombardment of residential areas. Without such measures addressing the Syrian victims to raise their voices will not make the issue less difficult because they should work first to let the victims have a voice that can be raised.
