Geneva’s trap and the nothingness

Geneva’s trap and the nothingness
Russia’s persistence that it does not interfere in the political affairs of Syria is a grave comic play.

And for Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to deny the fact that Russian warplanes are targeting civilians and pin it as a challenge to find an evidence of such claims is another joke in Syria’s dark reality, because its strikes can differentiate ISIS “terrorists” from women and children.

Russia’s final settlement aimed at purely creating an obstacle in the face of the high negotiating committee for the Syrian opposition just hours before their final decision about going to Geneva was made. This left the opposition in perplexed situation; for if they did not attend, then they would be deemed by Moscow as deliberately isolating themselves, denying a political solution for Syria and that will allow Russia to place its own opposition members deemed fit to Moscow’s criteria for a “National Unity Government” in Syria.

Many obstacles stand in the way of the opposition, however, the Russian-American agreement in Zurich on the eve of Kerry’s trip to Riyadh, enhances the likelihood for the opposition to be dragged into a trap in Geneva.

That is so due to the Russian-American agreement including Assad’s fate, which Moscow has not offered refuge nor did Assad request it.

So if the Syrians have fought for 5 years, sacrificed quarter of a million person and displaced millions, then how will Geneva 3 proceed? How many Syrians are still candidates to the aggression of the missiles and barrel bombs, before Mr. Kremlin reassures his victory over ISIS?

Despite all of that, Putin still says that Russia does not intervene in Syria’s politics. In addition, it is very obvious that Washington’s opposition training program does not worry Putin, neither does Iran’s viciousness.

In Geneva’s best circumstances, the opposition would not be able to pass any article without Assad’s approval, and that is in assuming that Assad would relinquish his own fate.

What negotiations then? Another 6 months of destruction and killing awaits Syria as it is moved from one occupation to another.
