Iraq executes 36 people for Camp Speicher massacre
Iraqi authorities have executed 36 people convicted with mass killing, in 2014, of hundreds of Iraqi air force cadets by ISIS militants in northern Iraq.

Convicts were executed in al-Nassiryah prison on Sunday, Anadolu Agency cited a source with in Iraqi Justice Ministry as saying.

President Fuad Masum ratified the death sentences of the convicts a week ago.

In June 2014, ISIS released videos that showed what seemed to be a line of Iraqi military recruits being marched at gunpoint. Later ISIS posted images showing mass murders. The officers were alleged to be affiliated to the Speicher base.

Human Rights Watch described the massacre as the "largest reported incident" where "ISIS captured more than 1,000 soldiers fleeing Camp Speicher... then summarily executed at least 800 of them."

The number of those murdered was 2,398, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights.

Iraq has plunged into a security vacuum since June 2014, when Daesh stormed the northern city of Mosul and declared what it calls a caliphate in Iraq and Syria.
